DOHA, Qatar — The United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) - Qatar Chapter held its fourth General Membership Meeting (GMM) for the Fiscal Year 2024-2025 at the Wyndham Grand West Bay Hotel last July 26, 2024 with the theme “Architectural Innovative Solutions and Regional Recognition: Exploring New Technologies and the ASEAN Architect Journey”.
More than 130 architect-members, dignitaries, officials from UAP National, Area-A, District A6, and representatives from sponsors Nabina Ceramic, TOTO and Apton have attended both on-site and in Zoom for a day of seminar, induction, oath-taking, and turn-over ceremonies.
The event kicked-off with a seminar featuring cutting-edge technologies and innovative solutions in the field of architecture. Nabina Ceramic General Manager Mr. Ahmed Houran presented the benefits of large porcelain slabs as a sustainable and hygienic solution starring top brands Marazzi, RAK, and Marca Corona. Mr. Shintaro Yamashita, Sales and Marketing Manager of TOTO Asia Oceania Pte. Ltd. has also shared new TOTO technologies with a spotlight on their washlet and floatation tub. Apton Partitioning Ltd UK Chairman Mr. Emad Turkman MBE focused his speech on revolutionizing architectural partitions. While UAP Qatar Past President Arch. Carolyn A. Camarao, UAP, AA has shared her journey to becoming the first ASEAN Architect from the chapter.

The opening ceremony proceeded, with an address from UAP National President Arch. Donato Magcale, FUAP, SFRIA, AA, APEC. Arch. Magcale, through a recorded message, recognized the dual essence of progress and recognition in line with the event’s theme, adding that “Architectural innovative solutions emphasizes the need to continuously push the boundaries of our profession”. He also congratulated the chapter saying “As one of the UAP chapters based in the MENA region, the UAP Qatar is highly commendable in strengthening the visibility of Filipino Architects in the region's architecture industry.”

Philippine Ambassador to the State of Qatar HE Lilibeth V. Pono in her keynote speech said “Innovation is at the heart of many professional fields. This is particularly true in architecture where the challenges of ever changing realities and the goal of achieving sustainability underscores the need for boldness and out-of-the-box thinking.” She added “Here in Qatar, Filipino professionals, notably Filipino Architects, have had a significant role in helping spurt our host country’s development and progress. Renowned for their world-class talent and creativity, Filipino Architects have been instrumental in the transformation, not only of this society, but the broader Middle East.” Her excellency also recognized the role of Filipino architects in nation building, and promoted the Philippine Development Plan 2023-2028 with the vision “Ambisyon Natin 2040 - Matatag, Maginhawa, and Marangal.”
UAP Qatar Chapter Welcomes New Leaders
The highlight of the evening was the oath-taking of new chapter officers including six members of the executive committee and 11 directors, as inducted by Past Secretary General and Current Area-A Vice President Arch. Jonathan V. Manalad, PhD, FUAP, PIEP. This was followed by the recognition of outgoing chapter officers, directors, special working committees, and presidential awardees.
FY 2023-2024 President Arch. Kriz Samed Quiogue, UAP in his valedictory address said “For me, leadership is not about holding onto power; it’s about being an instrument of service.” Quiogue, known for his principle of being a “servant leader and not the center of attraction” added that “The most important thing I hope you, my members, have taken away is that I have changed the way you look at the chapter and how we will serve the chapter in the future.”
The turn-over of gavel signified the transition to the new leadership under FY 2024-2025 Chapter President Arch. Jayson Santos, UAP, PIEP.
“I urge each of you to embrace the principles of bridging gaps, continuous improvement, respect, and solidarity. As we navigate challenges and opportunities, let us do so with collaboration and a commitment to excellence. Together we can build a legacy of innovation, inclusivity, and positive impact as United Architects of the Philippines Qatar Chapter”, Santos said. “One organization, one chapter, one love.”, he added.

Around 20 committee members and 12 new chapter members also took their oath.
The closing ceremonies provided inspirational messages from National Executive Vice President Arch. Annie C. Pugeda, UAP, FUAP, SFRIA, Secretary General Ma. Cecilia C. Viray, UAP, and A6 District Director Arch. Vergilio B. Cerbito, followed by dinner and socialization.
